It would, but it would make more of a difference if there was some acknowledgment of the ridiculousness of the position. If there’s one word that’s really triggered this response in people’s takes on the Arcade Fire, it’s “truth.” People don’t seem to be presenting them as paragons of a teenage truth, but as a sort of universal truth. This album isn’t about teens, from what I understand - it’s about being an adult, and an adult holding these views seems realistic but also questionable. Maybe I’m missing something, though, and maybe I’m just repeating what Tom and Dave said with more swearing - the problem isn’t that they’re sincere, it’s that they’re sincere and self-serious so there’s no way in unless you accept the worldview wholesale.
