I liked this article. A lot of the coverage of China’s 60th birthday celebrations have sounded ominous tones about their military displays etc. etc., but there’s nothing particularly unusual about this. We shoot off fake rockets on our Independence Day! Not that nationalism is ever entirely positive, but China’s here is not evil, or at least not unusually so. But a lot of American coverage of these sorts of things tends to paint it that way, and that’s a little creepy. China pride is really about prosperity, not anything else, and to darkly imply that there’s something more insidious (inscrutable?) going on is veering toward unacceptability, seems to me.
