When Did The Remix Become A Requirement?
A new piece at the Awl, by me. The chart above I put together to see whether there have, indeed, been more remixes over time, and yup: there’s a pretty dramatic rise through the 80s and 90s. So why’d that happen? In addition to the history covered well by others about the remix’s origins, I try to get into its place in the music biz context of the 90s and 00s and why that resulted in so many more remixes.
