It’s Not About The B-Bling B-Bling
Also I was talking to Lex and others in the pub about Jessie J and we were basically admitting that she’d moved from “GO AWAY” to a secret - not quite admiration, but respect maybe - for her unwavering commitment to being as terrible as possible in every creative decision all the time. “Love to hate” is not as well-populated a category as the cliche would have you believe but JJ falls into it.
I can’t even hate Jessie J because she’s so…sad, I guess? She always looks like she’s trying so hard, and it’s just never quite right, and that she is 100% aware of that. Present in her expression on any TV appearance is the suspicion that maybe she’s the victim of an elaborate prank, like somehow literally everyone else in the world got together and agreed to pretend like she was popular right up until the most harmful possible point to pull the rug out from under her. She’s pop’s Carrie - or pop’s Salieri, more accurately, knowledgeable enough about pop to know she’s not terribly good.
